I do like my true coat pro 2. I do a lot of doors and small project. It's perfect for that. I'll be using it again tomorrow to refinish some rocking chairs. I've got the pro7x for big 2+ gallon jobs.

5 gallons by brush and 20 gallons by sprayer? and with the sprayer, the neighbors will get a good tan. :)

Stain should not be spray. Is not paint

Semi-transparent or solid stain would have looked much nicer on that weathered wood.

Do not understand why speed is an issue unless you are a contractor where time is money. I think think this guy was in a hurry to get back to his Pokeman Go or his golf game. If you want a good job with anything it takes time and patience. The extra time used in doing it right is nothing compared to the years you have to live with the results. Do it the old fashioned way and do it right.

Spray sends a lot of stain into the air. Seems wasteful. There would have to be no wind too. Does it penetrate the wood well? You talk about the amount of time it took but did you get the same amount of coverage?

If you're going to spray, the better choice is a garden sprayer. I have the Grayco but the overspray would be all over the house if I used it.

Spraying is great if you want the stain all over your house as well.

I just did a stain job,I brushed it..I went with the grain,1st coat not heavy..and I made sure I wasnt leaving no extra stain on the wood..meaning I brushed it completely out..after 24 hours ill do anither coat.

Well, this is certainly an ad for the sprayer. Sprayers have their place as does the brush and roller.
Having to mask off was totally ignored and can be very time consuming. Sprayers also can and do leave an uneven surface, especially on the floor and generally need to be back-brushed for a good even coat. Then there is the extra cleaning required for the sprayer.
For your own deck, a sprayer would be a waste of money if you have no other use for it. If you can borrow one than it would be good for rails not near the house and watch which way the wind is blowing. Finally, the sprayer requires some skill to use well.
I would use a sprayer on rails if I had one and had a large deck or stained decks for others. A roller and 4" brush to back brush goes quite fast. Wood soaks up stain unevenly and will puddle if not brushed. -
yeah the sprayer is faster, when doing things with gaps in it like decking and fencing you will lose a lot of stain.

Giant brush is the way to go, better adhesion than a sprayer.

Any problems with over spray with using the sprayer?

I have one tip about applying the product on the spindles with the sprayer, this can help a lot with not spraying a bunch of product into the air. Take an old sheet and staple it to the top railing cap and let it hang off the opposite side that you are spraying. when you are done with that side, flip the sheet over to the other side and spray that side.

Came here to see which method has a nicer finish, not which one takes less time.

You know why you don't spray, especially in Minnesota? stain doesn't dry in the wind and minnesota is either windy, rainy, or snowy so it's a problem. You'll end up staining the house and your neighbors house.
Also, rolling doesn't get between the cracks and causes runs in between if you press too hard.
You'll need to have very little wind to get away with spraying, or you'll need a good hvlp, which isn't worth it for staining in my opinion. -
OMG the sprayers is a pain in the arse. Look at all the wasted product. The mist wound up on my home.

I probably already know the answer to this, but I am disappointed in the fact you didn't give a final summary of the quality of spray vs brush. Only speed. I would have really liked to know how the sprayer did, rather than "it's faster", which most people already know.
