This is how I spray paint latex paint through a HVLP gun and what I use to thin my paint with.

my paint can tells to mix 1 or 2 ounces of water to thin it out and allow longer dry time so why the windshield fluid?

This is a warning to anyone that is thinking about trying to spray latex with an HVLP gun. I gave this a try using washer fluid as the thinning agent, and an HVLP gun with a 2mm nozzle. To put it mildly, it was a big waste of time and money because the paint has to be thinned way down to about 40/50 or maybe even 50/50. I only went to 30% and the spraying was very spuratic. Half the time nothing would come out of the nozzle at all. Thinning latex paint down that far degrades it too much IMO. It may look fine as far as the finish goes, but don't expect it to last very long . I was spraying on metal, and what I ended up doing was sanding it down after it dried, and then using a roller with a 3/8" nap to put down the paint, and then go over it quickly with a dry 3 inch foam roller to smooth it out.

Sure would have been more believable if you painted something a different color, other than something already painted withe,,just sayin

Poor choice of Gun, Siphon Guns have to work much harder then its cousin the Gravity feed one. But, they both work fine.

Thanks for your video. You gave me the courage to give it a try. I did a lot of online research about spraying latex exterior paint with an HVLP gun. Mine is a cheapie from Harbor Freight. Plenty of folks on the Web have said cheap HVLP guns can't spray latex and produce good results. For one modest size project, I couldn't justify buying an airless spray outfit.
I needed to paint 16 large black shutters which had faded to light gray. I dreaded the thought of painting all those louvers with a brush. Really wanted to spray them. After watching your video, I decided to give it a try.
The Behr paint I used is Premium Plus Ultra. It is VERY thick and it was obvious it needed to be thinned before attempting to spray. The directions on the can said it could be thinned for spraying with up to half a pint water per gallon. Doing the math, that's 8 ounces in 128 or a 6¼% dilution. Doesn't sound like much does it? After seeing your video, I decided I had nothing to lose by diluting with "blue juice" rather than water. I figured the methanol would reduce surface tension moreso than water since getting better spreading was the goal.
Being a chemist, I like to do things scientifically. I started with 100 ml of paint, and added 10 ml of windshield washer fluid. I noticed it didn't want to mix readily. At first the paint seemed to congeal, but after plenty of patient stirring, it blended into a uniform mixture. But the stirrer stick when lifted out of the liquid didn't drizzle well at all, in other words still way too thick.
I kept on adding 10 ml aliquots of blue juice and checking the viscosity by observing how it flowed off the stirring stick. 20 and 30% dilution didn't seem thin enough, but when I tried a 40% dilution, it seemed much better. 40% is WAY more than anyone I found had used online but I forged ahead. I tested it in the viscosity cup provided in the Harbor Freight kit and it took about 60 seconds to flow out of the cup. HF directions said 10 to 40 were ok to spray, so I decided I might be close enough to give it a try. I used the smaller detail gun which worked great for a project of this size.
With the air pressure set at 50psi (the max recommended by HF) it sprayed very nicely. I finished the shutters in good time and am delighted with the results. They dried quickly and the finish looks great. No orange peel, very smooth finish. Hopefully this will give others the confidence to thin their latex with blue juice and spray their projects. Have at it... -
Why am I getting air bubbles Im stirring the paint slowly with a paint stirring stick and still getting air bubbles when I spray the paint. Is there any additive to prevent these bubbles?

I like the music at the end!

The WW solvent works amazingly. Love this tip

wow, great tip! worked beautifully. 2 coats took me 2 hours for 160' of trim, that includes prep and cleanup!didn't change the color. sprayed behr semi gloss ultra pure white, through a devilbiss finish line flg3 hvlp gravity feed, about 48 PSi at the compressor, buttermilk consistency maybe a touch thinner, was right on using a 22 tip. way to go, I'll never use a brush on doors and trim again. thanks.

Looks like you rolled it

Sorry to burst your bubble, but that is no a HVLP.
Cool tip though! -
We put 20% windshield washer in and at first it was runny, then we figured out how to adjust it. Can;t wait to paint my other walls using this method.

My project is all the shutters off my house, 20 of them. I'm using latex. I tried the paint right out of the can and got very little to come out. I thinned the paint in the sprayer twice with water to finally get some product out BUT the clogged nozzle got very frustrating. I've only sprayed the edges so far but I cant wait to try this trick out and finish spraying the rest.
I am curious about the nozzle, my instructions said to use the internal mix nozzle (for latex) which is just a point with a slit in it. Your nozzle looked like the other nozzle I have. Does the buttermilk consistency make the other nozzle a better choice?
This is my very 1st time trying to paint with this gun, its been in the original box in my basement for about 20+ years. -
Sure looks good, you were spraying from 6'' away, how is that possible? Also your HVLP spray gun looks alot like a standard 40 psi spray gun, nothing special there.
-
Clearly that is not a HVLP that is an ordinary paint gun.

I watched this video a while back and just started using washer fluid a couple weeks ago..... What a difference it makes when spraying! Great tip!

what is the blue stuff again?

Daniel... I was looking for how to thin out the super thick latex paint my wife wanted me to use on her porch swing... Everyone kept saying "1/2 cup of water to a gallon" tried it and the gun just spattered all over the test wall. Then you said the magic word "buttermilk". Thanks for that. Worked perfectly...
