if I were to do this using a gloss Rust-Oleum paint would I need to use a clear coat over it. what kind of options would I have besides urathane?

i use a 1,1 ratio with Rustoleum/acetone. it drys a lot quicker and works well with a HVLP gun.

Thank you for sharing. You do a grate job with little spending. Why do you recommend hardener in the mixture? How does help versus no hardener?
Cheers -

Hey DIYnation. Thank you so much for this info. To me it's gold. One question: how do you threat the plastic bumpers. I wet sanded them but to remove the aging and flaking clear coat and rust stains coming from the hatch I had to sand almost to the adhesion promoter, not everywhere but many places. Should I hit it with rust-oleum primer before the paint and also should I use your mixture ratio for the primer. On the can it says for metal only, should I use something like krylon primer for plastic and than even everything out with rust-oleum primer ? thanks for your input. BTW definately subed !

Hey diynation for spraying rustoleum primer do you just spray it like that or what ratio do you recommend for it gonna prime my car in a few weeks

Do you know if you can clear over this after a few days and car sanded? Thinking of urathane clear, I read a guy said he did after the paint cured for a month, that was without the hardener. I don't know if the Urathane clear will react with the enamal hardener. Thats my issue
-
For your primer formula, is it the same without the hardener?
-
Were did you get the mixing cup?
-
Can you use mineral spirit instead?

Great info, hard to get EXACT instructions on some things....many many different opinions that it's hard to decide what is the correct way. I'm gonna go with your method of mixing exactly. A couple of questions though if you have a chance!
.
.
After primer, shoot one coat wait 10-15 minutes shoot another coat, etc. Is it okay to do this 4 times for the gloss black or should I apply more than 4 coats with planning to wet sand/buff/polish later?
And when to wet sand and buff, wait a full week after the last coat to tackle this?
thank you sir! -
I'm looking forward to trying the Valspar hardener as it is so much cheaper than the regular auto paint brands.
One tip: Once the hardener is opened, the unused portion of it will turn to jello after a month or so, if you don't use it right away. To prevent this, very carefully put the can in your bench vise, and SLOWLY squeeze the sides together in the middle. Squeeze slowly until all the air is out of the can, bring the level of the hardener right to the top. Put the cap back on, and it will keep much longer this way. -
