Mixing Paint for HVLP Sprayers
Tricks, Ratschläge, Online, Reparieren, Landwirtschaft, Landwirtschaft Maschine
I use a Fuji HVLP sprayer to put great finishes on my projects. You can use about any kind of paint, even latex, if you thin it properly. Here I show you how it's done. www.redneckdiy.com

You seem like a nice enough guy and i like your video but the person that can eye-ball it(the expert like you) is not he person who who needs help mixing. In my opinion eye balling is not the best for the beginner. Even if the dial it in nice for the first cup when they refill is likely it will be off and mess up whatever they are spraying.
I have a Fuji three stage.. When starting out I highly recommend using the viscosity cup and target the times listed in the manual for the material you are spraying. I do find the cup a bit annoying over time as you have to add the water mix it up and take whip out the stopwatch. This can take a while to dial in, especially since some of paints I was spraying had 40 second target times. If it takes you 3-4 times to get the right time you might be spending 5 minutes just to balance out a cup.
What I found to be helpful was to use a cheap amazon kitchen scale plus the cup. First batch - Start out with say 300 grams of paint and then add water 10 grams at a time until I get the proper cup times. Write down that info down. Next time you can just use the scale and either skip the cup or just do one measurement to double check.
I spray a lot the same paint and primer so I have the weights written down for future use. To me the ability to replicate a mix make it a lot easier. -
eye ball method always makes my brain hurt less

Perfect. Been teaching some woodworking to a 10yo. His father has never been in his live. Over the last 3 weekends he has finished a 6' tall book case and we're going to paint it in the next hour. Got one of those inexpensive gravity feed sprayers but didnt know for sure how to thin latex to get an acceptable finish. Thank you for the technique! Exactly what I needed to know. I appreciate your presentation style and your expertise! Thank you

i swear i was just about to say the same thing about the paint can, they need to come up with a better idea.

Really dude, you didn't say anything on your video! You didn't pour in an accurate amount of paint, so you couldn't figure out the percentage of water, and you have no idea how much extender to use . . . so why the hell did you make this video? You "earned" a thumbs down for wasting my time!

I have used Floetrol in the past with a brush on furniture to reduce brushmarks, and it worked quite well. I've since upgraded to a sprayer, but haven't used it yet. I've got a project right now (Sofa Table) that I've got to finish. Do you have any recommendations for a nice crisp white furniture primer/paint?? I've always just used Behr Ultra with KILZ. Thanks!

Great video! Quick, to the point, with enough description of what you were doing to make it simple. Thanks.

Please use the proper materials for thinning the paint your using. For example: for Urethane you would use lacquer thinner instead of water. Also they have a lid that snaps on a can that helps pouring paint. Check your local paint store they may have one.

Please read your manual of your sprayer before using. It will give you allot of good tips in there.

If you clean up the containers after you use them. Then you will be able to reuse them again. Hope that helps.

Thank you Sir,
In return for the TIPS i have learnt from you i will provide you with my MOST VALUABLE. Adopt the metric system, its a new revolutionary system that allows you to know 10% from only shifting the decimal place one number to the left, (or to your right). Then you can look at the numbers on the side while you think of a design for a equally as convenient paint can design that allows us all to pour the fucking thing :), you will be so rich you'll even be able to convert back to imperial system to fill out those hours your gained each day.
Best Wishes,

This video does not explain how to mix paint for HVLP.
Never use additives in acrylic paint with a HVLP. Just good quality paint (filtered of debris if required) and clean water. Floetrol is designed to eliminate brush marks, unnecessary for spray application.
The acrylic (say for door, window casings and jambs) paint-water ratio for HVLP is minimum 5:1. A normal HVLP pressure pot is 1L volume. So 800ml paint/160ml water, min., properly mixed. A good HVLP whistles when the paint-water ratio is appropriate and sputters when too thick. When the HVLP is struggling the mixture is too thick, thin it down a bit. The HVLP, for acrylic, requires the fattest needle, like the #5 or 6.
The HVLP needles and apertures are tiny, like a spray paint can. A HVLP is just a big spray paint can. Acrylic paint is quite thick and to get through the aperture has to be quite thin.
I go chocolate milk consistency for primer and finish coat. This might seem a bit too thin but you move fast and steady across distances, never sticking around in one place. The water will evaporate, leaving the paint to cure. Press the trigger while moving, keeping a uniform distance from the trim, and coat the jamb or casing. Practice on scrap wood or drywall to get the feel.
If the HVLP doesn't whistle the mixture is wrong. HVLP, like any equipment, is all about time on the tools. -
That's how I measure my cookies mix.

You did a great job explaining this.........I have learned and will try on my projects...........Protect your DIGITS

Brother you mix latex paint like me. I use milk as example of what it should look like. That would be whole milk not 2%. Thanks , your videos have been a great help.
-
I would assume that the general finishes paint was a latex due to your adding water to thin.

cool . thanks for the pointer

Great video. Question, I have the mm3 system, use yellow tip, and spray latex enamel semi-gloss(primed sanded smooth cabinets). Used water and floetral to thin(about 35 sec in v-cup), and my finish came out more like a satin(2 coats). So i figured the floetral dulled the paint, got rid of it, thinned with just water and finish still same...maybe a little more sheen. But also wasnt smooth to run your hand across... kinda gritty feel.(not a dust issue) Any suggestions? Ideas?
