very nice and informative vid. I use a hvlp on all the trim and woodwork in high end custom homes for a smooth glass like finish

5 psi? was that what you said right? I always put too much I guess.

Guys a fantastic video! Thanks! I want to spray paint bicycle frames and HVLP seems the way to go due to lower wastage. I have a 50 litres compressor. You say that choking the fan is bad due to bigger volume being sprayed in one location, but a smaller fan would be desired for small areas like forks, chain stays, tubes, etc. Would you recommend a smaller nozzle? Maybe 1.2 or even 1.0mm?

Excellent tips. We learned to spray and use all our settings by spraying craft paper. When storing leftover OIL BASED paints, use Bloxygen and you can store them indefinitely. Bloxygen uses heavy, inert gas to protect your leftover paint or varnish by preventing oxygen or moisture damage. See www.bloxygen.com. Thanks!

Is that Dirk Nowitzki's kid?

Everybody knows that bro

thanks but the most informative point is that you have a 5HP compressor; even with little air pressure, HVLP is asking a lot of flow
is not it better to buy a lvlp or trans tech gun so to be at ease with the air (or using a mini gun, on furniture that should suffice) ?
my first experience was using a mixed type lacquer, nitro and shellac, to obtain a high gloss black
with only one compressor I was short of air and the flow was not that good when the compressor had to restart
I added a second compressor and obtained an adequate hvlp flow. and now I will upgrade the older compressor with a new V type pump and3 cv motor, and will be really at ease
That said I think a professionakl painter will be able to paint "correctly" with the cheapest equipment, and an amotor will do sh... with a good gun eventually -
Do more on paint mixing.

Use of a viscoty cup should be in this video. Have both type spray systems and the HF HVLP works fine but is not powerful enough for latex paint unless thinned. 25-35 seconds didn't do it and I was concerned about overthinning. about 5% recommended. So viscosity vs power for turbine HVLP needs discussing. With a compressor like mentioned I suspect it is a matter of ai pressure to get atomization.

amazing steady painters hand amazing wood work by the tall guy!!!

Nice tips, but that is not a HVLP.

Come on guys... Whats the deal with that regulator on the gun.
Pointless weight..
Might not seem like a big deal to you guys but ask any painter who paints all day long.
Make yourself a quick couple psi gauge if you want to check at gun air pressure.
If its really important to you talk to your gun manufacturer for a air cap testing kit.
Place your regulator on the wall of your booth, table whenever you paint but get it off your arm.
Your elbows will thank you -
Hey Jay:
where should I go to see good spray gun?..can you tell me which name are you using?
thank you for all your video by the way -
would this be the same for a oil based paint
-
Turbines are another alternative.

Excellent technique at 7:46. Nozzle turned 45 degrees outward at the end of each pass to angle off and halve the material. This is mandatory for surfaces being overlapped like casing and jamb corners where the paint will make two passes over the same place. Flick the wrist up or sideways just as approaching and passing across the corner area and the second pass, also angled away, will leave a uniform coat, with no need to pull out the roller and fix a puddle that will guaranteed run down.

Awesome video, thank you guys! Quick question: any advice/safety tips for spraying non-water based material inside?
-
Very good presentation but nothing was mentioned about spray tips sizes which is most important. You can't just go out and buy a cheap spray gun without knowing what tip size you want.
