5. I do a fair bit of professional HVLP spraying. When applying polyurethane, indoor or outdoor, the aim is to leave only the cured polyurethane product on the wood with no sags or runs. Instead of mineral spirits, a 'wet' solvent, I use dry solvent xylene that fast evaporates, leaving 100% dry polyurethane finish. MS and varsol are perfect for linseed or linseed-based house paint that are supposed to stay as 'wet' as long as possible, but will leave high grade wooden surfaces sticky. Wet solvents can spoil beautifully crafted handmade wood tables and chairs.
   
   The mixing ratio of varnish and dry solvent should never exceed 10:1. The 2:1 on the video is way over the top and the mist of atomized varnish going nowhere is visible. Misting is a key indicator that the mixture is way too thin. A good HVLP using correct air and fluid flow settings will lay down perfect uniform coverage coats rapidly. 99%+ of the fluid that leaves the nozzle impacts the substrate and adheres.

7. I used Spar Urethane on my project and it turned it yellow, do you have an idea why this happened.
8. That little paper face mask is not adequate for protection. You should be using a respirator. They are about $30. However, thanks for the tip about thinning 2:1 with mineral spirits.

    In Mexico and most of the spanish speaking countries you can find it as:
    Aguarràs (it is better than thinner to use to clean your brushes or spray guns).

11. When you spray outdoors look out for wind...the material can travel on get on houses and cars
12. Whilst i haven't tried it, yet. I often wonder if it's possible to clean a spray gun with lots of the appropriate thinner. eg By spraying water for for water based polyurethane.
    PS if i recall correctly, that mineral spirits you used as a cleaner, may leave a coating behind to pollute the next spray you use. It also pays to check the labels on their containers Very Carefully. Last year I discovered that White Spirits ( which should completely evaporate ) didn't when bought from a local "big box" store. Even their salespeople didn't realise that it was really a light grade of turpentine, which leaves a coating behind. Reading the fine print taught us that.
13. Interestingly the environmental effects that discolor the wood can be washed off an older piece with a good pressure washing before applying the polyurethane and made to look brand new.

17. Hi, Linn, I really like the look of the the finished wood.  Can you put a link for me as where i can buy a spray gun like yours?  I like the fact that it does not need a compressor to operate.  Also, would spraying older (weathered) wood still offer some protection?
