Horse Fly Sprayer Pump Discussion - Buddy Scratches his belly - Rick Gore Horsemanship

http://www.thinklikeahorse.org/ I talk about a pressure pump spray bottle that can be used for applying fly spray. The bottle can be found in the garden department at Walmart or other garden shops. It cost about 9 or 10 bucks. Yes I know the spray is adjustable and I tried to twist the end for a finer spray - I know someone will try and save me tell how I should try this. Buddy lays down and scratches his belly. Mr. T refuses to answer my question does he want a cookie. I think this sprayer sprays too much and too thick so it waste a lot of fly spray, so I prefer a good quality spray bottle with a better mist spray. This would be good for training a horse to accept fly spray by filling the pressure bottle with water and spraying down the horse so he gets used to it being sprayed. Buddy was a bad boy and ran off when I tried to spray him. Me spraying Buddy with no lead rope and allowing him the ability to run off and give himself his own release, teaches him bad lessons. I would not do this with a new or green horse that I was trying to teach a good lesson. DO NOT CHASE YOUR HORSE WITH FLY SPRAY. I have a recipe for homemade fly spray on my web site: http://thinklikeahorse.org/index-2.html#119 Buddy don't care if I play and chase him and I can fix this bad lesson very easily. If you do this with a new horse or one that is not sacked out well on fly spray, you will teach him to run away and get his own release from the pressure of the fly spray. Pressure and release has to be controlled by you NOT the horse. The will tell you when you go too fast or too much or do not give release enough for that horse, but you don't want a horse getting is own release when he chooses. NOW with that said if you are a dummy and put too much pressure and your horse rears or reacts strongly then you went too fast and failed to read the horse good enough to give proper release for training and learning to take place. Any horse can forced to rear, run off or fight, all it takes is a stupid human trying to go too fast and in a hurry.

Rick, do you use commercial fly spray or make your own? I heard that apple cider vinegar can work well and save you some money. Curious what you use in your sprayer. I have been going through a lot of bottles ($$) of the traditional stuff.

Stop spraying man made chemicals on the horses.

I have terrible hand problems and the sprayer bottles are a nightmare for me. I've been using this setup for a couple years because it doesn't add to my hand pain or cramp up my hands. I only fill it half way though, because the weight of the bottle full is difficult some times for me to hold with one hand. This is a great trick! And putting on bug spray goes by so fast this way! Glad to see a video of this so others can do it this way :)

And people wonder why horses don't like their faces sprayed with fly spray! LOL! I couldn't stop laughing when you were like "Good tip, if you spray fly spray or pee in the wind, it sprays back". It reminds me of when I was riding, and a little girl girl spit and another girl next to her goes "Ohhh, I felt some rain, is it raining?" ! LOL!

Is Mr. T a Mustang ??

Hey, that could work for giving horses baths. Save a little bit of time and money (kinda). Fill it up with water and mix some soap into it. Hose down or get your horse all nice and wet and then spray them down with the soapy water. Make sure to void the face and eyes tho of course. I've been using a milk jug and shampoo bottle. Thanks :)

Harbor Freight has an attachment for those sprayers that makes it more misty and less wasteful. We use a backpack sprayer & wand now for the cows and horses, but we were using something very similar for a bit.

Hey Rick, you can make your own natural fly spray. There are all kinds of recipes on the internet. Its a lot cheaper than buying those damn expensive bottles from the tack store. And without chemicals.
