Dubspot Tutorial: How to Beat Grid Live Drums w/ Traktor + Ableton Live (Unquantized Tracks)

Read full article here: http://bit.ly/vnWZ87 As a Traktor specialist, one of the most popular questions I've been getting lately is "How can I beatgrid tracks that are recorded with a live drummer?" and "How can I beatgrid my classic disco records or vinyl rips in Traktor?" Unfortunately the answer is as of now, it's very difficult and almost impossible to beatgrid these tracks only using Traktor. However, while doing a Traktor training with David Morales, I found a way to get these tracks perfectly quantized to a click track using Ableton Live 8's warping engine, so you can bring the tracks back into Traktor and beatgrid them perfectly. Here is a step by step method on how to do it.

If I want to purchase Abelton for this purpose only, which version should I get?
-
Any idea if GarageBand(2015) has this option?
-
i have a track with two different tempo's. does this technique works then as well?
-
nice work!

How about thriller that method has worked for everrrrrryyyyy song except thriller the song drifts at mid song then I have to tap the beatgrid back and it's fine again but how can I get it to stay on beat all the way through

Your explanation was exactly what I was looking for. I was starting to pull my hair out setting every marker manually. Thank you!
-
SO helpful! Thank you!
-
which live 9 will do this?

I agree that they should come up with a better solution for beatgridding tracks that fluctuate in BPM. I'm sure this would require some intense coding and that might not be high on their priority list. I guess us master jedi DJs have to go the long route for now and it will separate us from the rest!

Yes, warping will render the original audio, and you will lose some audio quality. That's why I use platinum notes to boost the audio back up and make it more DJ friendly. I keep the original file as well of course. Thanks for watching!

I actually use Platinum Notes after exporting my audio to boost the levels and make the track sound better on sound systems. I know this is the cheap easy method but its good enough for me when dealing with lots of tracks. I did this when I spent the week warping and beatgridding Felix Da Housecat's collection.

One tip I want to give to anyone who is warping tracks, that I didn't mention in the video is to TURN ON HI-Q MODE. This will give you much better sound quality when you are warping tracks.

Native Instruments would better be working 24/7 on better beatmatching, fe. only 1 mastertempo per track is a nightmare for older, non-quantized, (manual drummed) tracks. Ableton's approach and algorithms are way better... If traktor's beatmatching logic would be as good, it would be the final DJ's Paradise!! ;-) rgdrs

Hi, But this will render (decode/encode) your original recording! Means that the quality is going down, artifically lowered by ableton's 'complex pro' tempomatching algorithm, in this case. I wonder how bad the quality decrease really is on a PA system, fe.? As long as the original recording is a good quality,320kb/s encoded, dynamics were still quite ok, it will not be audible... Otherwise? Don't overwrite the the original recording you had, method is clean (it will beatmatch) but 'hard'.
-
you had to "warp at 120 bpm from here" , not simply the "Warp from here'..... ;) that's why the track is not perfectly synced with the metronome :)
-
Ableton exports only in wav and aiff :) use Platinum Notes to convert the track to 320kbps mp3 and make it DJ-friendly ;)
-
Is it really necessary to export the tracks as wav files? My file was 42 mb that's kind of big, normally around 9mb
-
I noticed that after I exported from ableton and put it in traktor the levels where really low. And yes I checked the levels before exporting and they were just below clipping? Any suggestion?
-
anyone heard of warp my music. com ? seems like a very easy way to fix tracks (but you have to pay)
-
that's brilliant - I always used to be annoyed with that track for that reason - it sounded like it was a drum machine but it would quickly shift out-of-sync.. great tutorial, you get to the point and don't waffle.
